Clothings and Local food

A light woolen garment during the summer season and heavy woolen garments during the winter season accompanied by a scarf or muffler and a woolen cap to cover the ears are ideal clothing for Darjeeling and recommended by us. Umbrellas and raincoats are useful during the summer and monsoon season. Sports shoes could be a comfort during walks and treks as some of the roads are steep. Sun glasses and other holiday accessories could add flavor. However keep your baggage light and trendy for comfortable transfers.

Cuisine of Darjeeling is rich and unique as many other Indian cuisines. Influence of the colonial British Raj, Nepal and Tibet can be clearly seen in the cuisine. Moreover, the geographical and climatic conditions of Darjeeling have also had an impact on the way and kind of dishes prepared in the Darjeeling . Some of the local food are as follows.

Momo - Meat dumplings which are steamed and accompanied by a bowl of clear soup and achaar. One can also order for vegetable momos in which the meat is ideally replaced by cabbage and other vegetables.

Thupkas - Tibetan noodles mixed with egg/meat, vegetables with a predominant soup base.

Shaphalay - Tibetan bread stuffed with meat.

Aludum - Typical Indian potato preparation which the hill people cannot do without.

Tibetan tea - Salt tea which is mixed with butter which has its own distinct taste.

Tongba - Local brew made from millet and has to be sipped through a bamboo straw. Usually found in the local haat (fair) held on Sunday.
